Are Bands like Brokencyde and The Millionaires "Punk"?

http://www.punknews.org/article/33989

"My thought is this: You don’t have to like Brokencyde, or Jeffree Star, or the Millionaires, and I’m not saying that I do necessarily. But they are doing something, capturing something, stirring up controversy. Punk bands used to stir up controversy; if you’re taking that as the definition of “punk”, these artists could fall under that category." ~Kevin Lyman

Can a band be "punk" simply by stirring up controversy? Or is there more to it? Does it need to include certain styles of music, or appearance, or message... is there a "punk" ethos and aesthetic (perspective, values, attitudes, customs, traditions) that is not all inclusive of every artist who elicits controversy (or even public outrage)? Or is "punk" an attitude not umbilically connected to any one genre?

But they are doing something
WHAT 'SOMETHING'. D:<

i'm not really good with 'music category'..but brokencyde,J*,and Millionaires certainly are not 'punk' to me. Jemina Pearl and The Bronx are.

Miming n stage is def not punk. The end. I don't care if kevin lyman says they're punk. That's the most ridiculous ting I've ever heard! And I can imagine any real punks ( young and old alike) would ever agree that a group of girls in skimpy outfits dancing provocatively on stage to a prerecorded set of songs is punk. No dice.

That is not punk. Maybe if you take a trait of punk out of context, which is what it seems like he did, but otherwise no.

Punk is more than just stirring up controversy, it's about music (real music, not this, this...whatever it is) and it's about an attitude and so much more.

I always pictured "punk" as loud guitars, tattoos, mohawks, rebellious kids on skateboards, and a lot of swearing. But that descpription makes me sound like a terrible person who makes awful stereotypes.
In some way, I want to agree with Kevin- you don't have to like them, but they are doing something that's "stirring up controversy". Now, we obviously have different ideas of what "controversy" is, but when this is looked at, ideas of "controversy" have changed since Warped Tour 1994 to Warped Tour 2009. Music in general has clearly changed as well. I'm not saying that what The Millionaires and brokeNCYDE (or however it is actually spelled) are doing is right, wrong, good, or bad, (in my eyes, I think they are a prime example of the lowest of lows) but there are still a good number of people out there who actually support what they do and like whatever it is they perform on stage. The things they perform about are actually, sadly, things that do happen today (of course, not in the serious aspect or like what other artists might write/perform about when concerning society) and it's all part of what one might consider "controversy".

....Or I could just completely disagree with everything I just said and think what Kevin is saying is a poor justification for acts like The Millionaires and brokeNCYDE to be on Warped Tour.

I'm still not exactly sure of what I think of all of this, especially with how it's been blown up on the internet and there are so many different opinions and sides.

I don't want to make anyone upset over what I just said. I'm not trying to start an argument.

Kevin Lyman sounds like he's doing damage control.

This was his damage control for putting them on the tour in the first place... so far there's been no comment since the current controversy of using playback etc.

My problem with the concept he raises is... is the controversy over the ideas a band is presenting, or is the controversy just that the band really sucks?

Cobra Starship played Warped Tour and they and their music about as non-punk as anything... but made up for that lack by being GOOD. Same with some of the hip-hop acts and artists like Shooter Jennings (who had an awesome set in Ventura this year). I don't think raising a controversy about being on the tour because the band simply doesn't make good music (for it's genre or any other one) qualifies as "punk".

My idea regarding Kevin Lyman's comment is that if you qualify your life or music or attitude as punk and that it encompasses "controversy," I envisioned that controversy to mean that something good or something that needed to be said or heard was coming out of that controversy....challenging people to think globally (the Clash and early U2), challenging people to question things and the status quo (the Sex Pistols and every other punk band that followed them), mixing musical genres and challenging stereotyped notions of music (Blondie, Run-DMC, the Talking Heads)...I really want to go on and on; but I don't think saying or doing for shock value qualifies that as punk because it's controversial...It's controversial because you're trying to push talentless, let's get famous fast like Tila Tequila, Myspace clones off as music and punk music at that. No good comes of the "controversy" these so-called "artists" bring up unless you consider manner-less, rude, nasty, underage drinking, and careless sexual activity good things to be spoon feeding kids these days.

Sex tapes cause controversy too, i don't consider them punk.
And im not comparing those bands with sex tapes, it's just a metaphor.. i think.

And Lyman is not really calling them punk.
...if youre taking that as the definition of punk, these artists could fall under that category."

BUT causing controversy is not the definition of punk, maybe just a part of the whole. i guess that makes Brokencyde and the others bands in question 'unk'. There i solved the problem :D

THIS!
"You don't look punk," I say. "Like what I thought punk was."
"Oh, is there a punk look?" [Lake] asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, like a Mohawk or something. Plaid pants," I say. "Like the girls in your band."
"You don't know shit," she says. "You can't just go into a Hot Topic and buy a costume and be punk. It's more than that."
I shrug.
"So what is it?" I ask. "What's punk?"
She shoots me a look.
"You need to figure it out for yourself," Lake says.
