FQK THESE FQKING FLASH ADS!!!@@!#$~!$

I swear, if my browser freezes up one more time tonight from these stupid lame ass animated ads they're stuffing onto my profile, I'm going to completely lose it. I've already had to force-quit 7 times tonight trying to upload concert photos. IT GOT OLD REALLY FAST.

I'm sure they didn't intend to get this reaction, but all they've done is given me the solid opinion that I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING IN THOSE ADS... whether it's some crappy "texting through the snow" thing (the ad freeezes before I ever find out exactly what they're selling, but it doesn't mtter, I won't buy it whatever it is)... or worse, "Office2007", which I would only own if I wanted my Mac to freeze solid every 5 minutes ... OH WAIT, IT'S ALREADY DOING THAT just displaying the ad for the crappy software.

If I want to use a website that freezes my browser with badly written ad code, I'd be on YOUTUBE right now. Why is Buzznet acting like Youtube???

Wow, I'm surprised I managed to write an entire paragraph without having to restart the program. I'm sure once I'm through venting and try to do something constructive, like upload photos, it'l;.e//1,./;.////...../.

I blame it entirely on Davey Havok...

If my cat ate my Tiger Army photos...

See... this is what happens when I have a GOOD experience doing something. Afterwards the Karm bus runs me over, rhen backs up and repeats...

When I got home from the trip last night, I checked the DF board and saw people were asking for photos of Dabey coming onstage with TA for Incorporeal, so to download what I have on the Lumex (since I don't hav rechargeable batteries for it) , I switched the chip into my Nikon, put the Nikon chip in my card wallet, and downloaded the shots from the Lumex overnight... (all the shots currently online are from the chep Lumex, not the good ones from the Nikon D50)

So this afternoon I go to download the Nikon pics, and the card is missing...

I am currently tearing my room apart trying to see if it dropped out somewhere (my card wallet sucks that way)... knowing that I have at least one cat who will either play with or eat. Or try to eat (I caught him chewing on a large plactic cased tape measure once...)

Los Angeles bans "N-word"

From The Los Angeles Sentinel

City Bans N-word

Written by Evan Barnes, Sentinel Staff Writer, on 15-11-2007 00:17

Motion to Ban Racial Slur Unanimously Passed

In the latest response to elected officials and citizens debating the use of the “N-word,” the Los Angeles City Council officially passed a resolution to ceremonially ban its use on November 9, setting off a debate over free speech versus responsible speech.

The resolution, introduced by Councilmember Bernard Parks, was unanimously passed 11-0 after hearing testimony from civil rights leaders and the owner of the Laugh Factory, the club where comedian Michael Richards sparked a firestorm last year when he used the word during his stand-up routine.

The move comes after similar actions taken by the New York City Council, who passed a similar resolution in February, and the NAACP, who symbolically buried the word this past summer.

Councilwoman Jan Perry said she was very pleased to join Councilmember Parks “in seeking a symbolic ban on the use of the N-word” as well as join the national movement against it.

“Everyone has the right to speak due to the First Amendment allowing freedom of expression, but you don’t have the right to inflame, insult and attack people,” Perry said.

Some have questioned whether a “symbolic ban” proves anything but in the mind of Councilmember Herb Wesson, symbols are just as a valuable as actions.

“As elected officials, we have to lead by example and support others, like the ‘Mothers in Action’s Respect Me Coalition,’ who are showing leadership,” Wesson said. “How can we demand respect from others if we don’t show respect for ourselves and our community?”

The “Respect Me” Coalition may have been birthed from radio personality Don Imus’ remarks towards the Rutgers women’s basketball team, but their drive for self-respect is no different than what the City Council hopes to achieve with this resolution, which is to educate people on the harm the N-word causes.

Both Perry and City Council President Eric Garcetti alluded to Council meetings where speakers would use the word to incite the crowd. As a result, there is now a sign in the council chamber that bans the use of inflammatory language against anyone based on their ethnicity or sexual orientation.

“People can’t ban a word if it’s used in context to express an idea, but the moment it is used to rile people up to incite people to violence, that’s where we can draw the line,” Garcetti said.

The recent gang tensions between Blacks and Latinos highlighted this concern as there were cases where Latino gang members used the word as they targeted young Black men.

It was exactly one year ago when Richards directed the word repeatedly towards four Black patrons at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood. The incident sparked discussions around the country and since then, it has come under heavy scrutiny inside and outside the Black community.

Two weeks after it happened, several Black political leaders and others held a press conference at the Sentinel to encourage people of all races not to use the word.

Rev. Jesse Jackson called for “all people in public usage to stop using the N-word; its use is rooted in hatred, pain and degradation,” Rev. Jesse Jackson said.

Since the end of slavery, the word has been used primarily to insult Black people because of their skin color and the stereotypical attitudes. Perry said she can remember vividly each time word was used against her.

But with the rise of stand-up comedians like Richard Pryor and Blaxploitation films in the 1970s, the word became reborn as a symbol of pride and in the 1980s, South L.A. hip-hop artists N.W.A. and Ice-T used the word heavily in their songs, which eventually led to it becoming part of the hip-hop vocabulary.

This leads to another issue with the word: who ultimately profits the most from it? While entertainers claim they are taking back the power of the word, it is mostly White-owned media companies that reap most of the financial benefits from it.

The “big four” record labels - Sony BMG, EMI, Warner and Universal Music Groups - own close to 80 percent of the American music market and as rappers have made songs using derogatory language, it is these companies who get paid from what some call “self-degradation.”

For the last few years, it has been assumed that Whites are the ones who purchase the majority of hip-hop albums. Although there is no physical data to support this, since hip-hop has gotten more play on Top 40 radio and Whites are the dominant racial group in the United States, one can see how this is most likely the case.

With no education behind the word’s dark past, future generations will hear the word without being aware of what they are saying and that is what the Council most hopes to change.

Garcetti made it clear that the word “is not just something that’s part of our history in the past, it’s part of our present. Whether it’s a celebrity or a knucklehead on the streets or someone who is a vicious racist, [it] seeks to disempower people by making them sub-human.”

To those who question why the Council made this decision now, Garcetti responded because racism has become more subtle these days, the word has become a gateway into accepting more serious actions.

And with tensions currently at a cooling point, it is time to act now before the Council is forced to act because of another senseless tragedy.

Jade Puget blogs about the new AFI album...

New blog from Jade on AFI's Myspace page...

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Oye todos

Hi all, Jade here. What's new? Thought I'd check in, I called your phone but it totally went right to voicemail.
It's that time again, new album time. AFI 8. I had to count them out on my fingers just now to figure out which one we were on.
This is always my favorite time of the whole process because you don't really know what the next album is going to sound like. Well, actually, Dave(y) and I spent the last 3 days locked in a hotel room writing and we already have 4 new songs.
I have tons of material written so I'm rearing to go. (I also have about 40 songs in various stages of completion for what will be the next Blaqk Audio.)
As you probably already know, we're putting out an EP soon too, of unreleased songs from the last 2 albums. We're working on the artwork for that as we speak.
Maybe you've already heard one of them, Carcinogen Crush? Interesting fact, that's the only one written by Hunter, although the chorus has went through some changes.
I remember when he brought in a demo of it, it was all in whispers because he didn't want to wake up his neighbors.

So that's about it for now, we'll be hard at work on the new album, any questions? Nice seeing you again, you look good.

Once more into the fray...

Tommorrow, I will try to tie up the loose ends (or beginnings) on the two concert-trip journals I've posted here ( Misery VS The Wall Of Death, and San Francisco 09.01.2007) as this week starts yet another, sure to be harrowing, journey... (and believe me, the rollercoaster has already started down the track...)

Already *sure* to be featured...sleep deprivation, overdrawn bank accounts, missed connections, GREYHOUND, lost in L.A. (again), stranded in a strange city with no money or cell phone (again), and the everpresent possibility that I end up with no pictures whatsoever of Tiger Army, and instead come home (eventually) dehydrated, limping, in desperate need of a shower, with shots of a lot of pretty clouds and shiny reflective surfaces...and possibly the interiors of various police stations, emergency rooms, bus shelters... and suspicious looking street creeps in the event my camera's data chip is found near the body and the police need to round up suspects...

Re: Stop Breeding and Selling Rabbits

Thank you for sharing your concerns with us regarding our test of dwarf
rabbit sales in our stores. Your feedback is important to us and we're
taking it seriously.

This particular test only involves about 25 of our more than 900 stores
and is likely to hold at this level until we have more information. We
conduct in-store tests to get a real-world view of all the issues
related to the sale of a particular pet before we do anything more.
During this test we're collecting additional data and information
related to breeding, health and care, associate training, retention,
customer satisfaction, adoption vs. sales, population and all other
aspects related to sale of these pets. We carefully test concepts to
make sure the best interests of the pet, the Pet Parent and our business
are served.

We have received letters and phone calls from various animal welfare
organizations including the House Rabbit Society as a result of this
test. Because the HRS's letter addresses a number of concerns that also
have been voiced by other groups and individuals, has been widely
circulated, and serves as the basis for many of the letters we have
received, we have posted both it and our response online at
www.petsmartfacts.com. We encourage you to visit this site to read our
response and for more details about this test.

If we choose to expand the test or to eventually implement rabbit sales
throughout our system, it will be only after we are convinced that we
have a full understanding of all the issues and that we can provide this
pet to homes in a responsible and ethical manner.

Importantly, during this test we will continue as we have always done to
partner with qualified local rescue organizations that adopt out rabbits
and other pets in our stores. We expect nothing to change in this regard
no matter what the test's outcome.

We share your passion for pets and want to assure you we'll do what's
right for our Pet Parents and their pets. Thanks again for sharing your
concerns with us.

Sincerely,

PetSmart Customer Care

Original Message Follows:
------------------------

(This is the text of the form letter available on PETA's website)

Chair and CEO Philip L. Francis

Dear Chair and CEO Francis,

I was appalled to learn that PetSmart has recently begun
"test-selling" rabbits in its stores. In addition to adding to
the serious problem of rabbit overpopulation, PetSmart is
reneging on its commitment not to sell certain animals,
including dogs, cats, and rabbits. If PetSmart is a company
that, according to its own Web site, considers caring for pets
"a moral obligation and responsibility," how do you justify
contributing to the breeding and selling of bunnies (or any
other animals, for that matter) - who suffer and must be
euthanized in shelters nationwide, just as dogs and cats are -
to be either moral or responsible?

Rabbits are the third-most surrendered companion animals in the
U.S., after cats and dogs. PetSmart's reckless decision will
condemn countless homeless rabbits to death. Please halt your
plans to sell rabbits. I will not shop at PetSmart, and I will
be sure to tell all my friends and family members to do the
same.

Sincerely,
MXC

San Francisco 09.01.2007, Part IV of IV - Skyscapers

Continued from San Francisco 09.01.2007, Part III of IV

09.01.2007 7:00 AM

I left the Port of San Francisco and wandered back into the financial district. Remarkable how only a few blocks of buildings  could erase the existence of such a huge body of water from people's consciousness...  I decided I would walk around and get city-shots until the banks opened, since I still had no debit/credit card (SF, Part I: someone steals my credit card number and empties my bnk account by subscribing to multiple "Men's Magazines" just before I leave for this trip) and only have a couple of dollars in change to my name.

At some point I noticed that the morning light and the vivid sky were reflecting back beautiful cityscapes inside the windows of the buildings along Market Street...

I spent the next hour falling madly in love with my circular polarizing filter...

San Francisco 09.01.2007, Part III of IV - Sunrise in SF

Continued from San Francisco 09.01.2007, Part II of IV

09.01.2007 5:30 AM

Commuters started to fill BART (train) so I hopped off at the Embarcadero stop, thinking I could get close to the water and take a few photos.

San Francisco 09.01.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Coming up out of the station, the sky was barely beginning to fade to that glowing indigo shade meaning the sun would be cresting the horizon soon. I stopped to get  few shots of buildings backlit by a lightening sky, then turned towards the bay and was immediately struck by the image of the clock tower at the Port of San Francisco a block or two away. I tried forever to get a good shot but even though it was still lit, the sky behind it was getting too bright and backlit it like crazy. I decided I had the best shots I could get, and headed down to the water.

San Francisco  9.1.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

I snapped several classic "high school photo class" type of shots at the Port building, then walked over to the water... where I was struck full force with an absolutely gorgeous view of the Oakland Bay Bridge framing a glowing pink sunrise (it looks a lot more orange in the photos, but trust me, it was bright neon pink!)

I kept shooting until it was fully light outside. As I went to walk away, a couple stopped me and asked if I could get a snapshot of them on their camera, since I was "obviously a professional photographer". I took an artistic shot of them in front of the bridge... I felt a little weird.

I wandered back to the Port building, and as I walked away through the plaza, turned and got one more shot of the tower.

Then headed to Market St, stopping to photo several cool  buildings and street views with extreme perspective shots, with the ghost of an idea forming in my mind...

San Francisco 09.01.2007, Part II of IV

I'm bringing this concert blog over from another site and need to reformat the sections and re-add the photos as I do so, So I apologize that they're showing up out of order... I'll fix that when I have them all up...

09.01.2007 3:00 AM

After the Blaqk Audio show at Popscene and I ran out of money and got pushed out of Denny's, I had to walk around Downtown SF until morning when I could get a train (BART) down to where my family lived in the South Bay... I decided I had to get SOME photos that night of SOMETHING, even if it meant showing every predator on the street I had something worth stealing ...

...$2000 in camera equipment I starved for months to buy, that had to be locked in someone's car during the show while everyone with a cheap ass camera they could shove down their cleavage got to take photos of the guys' debut performance...

I decided not to waste the opportunity to photograph San Francisco and have SOMETHING to take home for all I went through (see SF part I) getting to this show.

09.01.2007 4:40 AM

I watched City workmen washing down the streets and settled across from the Powell Trolley Plaza for some time and walked around Market Street, but rather suddenly the wet paving and night air on my poor tortured feet was icy cold and HURT. Looking around I noticed that BART had started running trains out to the North and figured I had enough change left to ride back and forth for awhile and get warm...

DL07.17.07img0593 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

I decided to take the line out to where I used to live (Pleasant Hill.... why they named it that, I never understood. I went to Diable VALLEY College (for awhile). The only hill I knew was near the base of Mount Diablo (and that name sort of speaks for itself)) and I really wanted to see if the old railroad apartments that stood in sight of the BART line in Oakland were still there.... I have many photos of the interior, but never got a shot of the ugly yellow wrapper on so much lovely woodwork, plaster and red carpeting. Unfortunately, it was too dark to see much of Oakland and even several passes didn't give me any view other than BLACK and a few blurry street lights. I wonder if they're even still standing :-(

Misery VS The Wall Of Death, Part II of IV

continued from:

Misery VS The Wall Of Death, Part I

7:00 PM 10.28.07:  I fly out of the grocery store to the cab, get in, and start trying to regain some sense of acceptance that I will in all likelihood be missing the very band I wanted to photograph, and am using the funds I'm supposed to be paying towards keeping the electricity on in my house to get down to the show, anyway. But how can I NOT photo Sick Of It All after HOB goes and gets me permission to do it??? They cancelled their West Coast tour earlier this year after Lou (Koller) was sidelined with severe back pain from a ruptured disk (I can totally relate), after missing the chance to photograph them when they opened for AFI in January (THAT was a GREAT show... especially when AFI's crew (Smith and RJ) came flying out of backstage and dived into the crowd during one song; and Andrew's head-walking to sing onstage with Davey during AFI's set was legendary before he even had a chance to get home from the show)

So I sit, in the back of  dark cab, and try to be zen.

This lasts until I get down to the part of the 15 Fwy going through Rainbow, and directly to my right off the shoulder are 5 firetrucks and flames leaping into the sky. Passing it, it looks like a structure fire, not one of the wildfires that were still burning in San Diego County at that time. The cabbie looks uncomfortable.

Then I notice that both sides of the road are BLACK, and the smell of smoke and fire floods the car... but I can't see enough in the dark to see what the damage is (I would get  chance on the way home). Eventually, that passes, as we get closer to the city.

Then the guy starts asking "Do I turn here?" every time we approach an interchange. I'M NOT THE DRIVER!!! THAT"S HIS JOB!!! I know enough to stop him from landing me in Oceanside, but I start getting really nervous.

8:40 PM 10.28.07:  The nervousness is justified when he breezes past every ramp and looks to be on his way to Mexico.

Viva Hate is done and Madball is on stage.

Okay, we can get to the 5 and right into Downtown (I have map, once I'm in downtown, and know basically where it is from years of going to conventions in that neighborhood). I give him the map. He looks at it upside down. His ceiling light is broken, so we're trying to read the map by the light of cell phones. I notice the 5 is ending and he took the wrong off-ramp. "Is this it?" he asks...

I look t the huge sign announcing that he's driving into the Navy port (complete with NO U-TURNS sign and security checkpoint with armed men) and tell him, "Um, no." He stops in the middle of the entrance, makes a (bad) U-Turn, and then passes up the ramp to get back on the Fwy he just accidentally left and strikes out on a surface street "looking for the highway".

I point him towards the 5, knowing if we could get back on it it would go down into Downtown. He TURNS. I point out we're by the docks. "The docks?" he says. Yes, that's what they have all those ginormous cranes and ships right there. I look ahead and see what looks like cars traveling down a ridge line and realize I'm looking at the Coronado bridge. Then we hit a dead end.

Cabbie turns AGAIN, but starts going in the right direction. I point out the 5 onramp. His cell phone rings... he's chatting away "No, actually I'm in San Diego right now", as he PASSES the onramp. At this point, I can SEE the buildings Downtown. I point out we missed the Fwy. He looks confused, starts to turn AGAIN (away from the buildings) so I start gesticulating wildly directing him to GO TOWARDS THE BUILDINGS. YES, THERE. THAT'S WHERE I"M GOING. THE BUILDINGS.

He goes towards the buildings. Slowly.

10.28.07 9:00 PM: Accepting the low bidder on a flat rate to San Diego definately had it's drawbacks... and that's all I'm going to say about the remainder of the trip...

10.28.07 9:10 PM: I'm at the HOB box office and they've given me a contract to fill out and sign before I cn pick up my photo pass... my vision is so fuzzy I can't tell what half of it says... I think I my have signed away my first born male offspring to Disney in return for being able to photograph a band in their trademarked establishment (the main issues seem to be that I might get their building/interior in the background of my shots.) I check off boxes, initial points, and sign my life away... and they take the form into the back to be approved and countersigned...

...then bring me back two tickets and a butt-ugly blazing pink sticker with "PHOTO" written across it in black magic marker and "Property of House of Blues" in fine print along the bottom.

I hope that's refering to the sticker...

I go up to the door and wait for security to finish searching and "wanding" a few people ahead of me. When it's my turn I start to show them my camera bag but they see the pink sticker and just wave me through. (I've never been searched when I have a photo pass... seriously, they trust photographers not to be carrying contraband items??? :-).

Then I'm in a dark stairwell trying to figure out if I'm supposed to go up, or down, and I hear Madball thanking the audience and leaving the stage.

(expletive deleted)

10.28.07 9:25 PM: I scope out the merch table and glance around the main floor, then decide to hit the ladies room and use the better lighting during the time between sets to replace batteries and memory chips and make sure I don't look TOO horribly beastly after the trip, because there are some extremely attractive punk and psycho girls outside and I'm feeling bit under-whelming with zero makeup, split ends and baggy jeans.

Yep, look like shit. Oh well...

Later, I'll discover that I probably threw away my ear plugs when I tossed the empty battery packaging...

Viva Hate - House Of Blues, San Diego 10.28.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Eric Razo, Matt "Wedge" Wedgley and Geoff Kresge of Viva Hate (drummer Greg Utter wasn't in sight) at The House of Blues, San Diego on 10.28.2007. They're on tour with Madball and Sick Of It All... Unfortunately, the Karma-Cab driver got lost over by the Naval base and Port of San Diego and I completely missed Viva Hate, arriving downstairs just as Madball was leaving the stage, and was only able to catch Sick Of It All's set.

After the show, Viva Hate kindly posed for a shot for Buzznet, and promised that I'll be able to photograph them on stage when they swing back through California again. They continue on tour with Sick Of It All into November.

Their first 4 song CD/7" Vinyl, Viva Hate - Hateful and Hollow is available at their merch table, just in time for Halloween... Viva Hate is Geoff Kresge (AFI, Tiger Army, The Horrorpops), Matt Wedgley (The Force, Circus Tents), Eric Razo (The Henchmen) and Greg Utter McEntee ($wingin' Utter$)
