MiseryXchord - Spontaneous Sweet Moments of Madness...

I'm slaving this over to my journal from my entry in the Big On Buzznet contest forum, because I just realized I never posted it in my journal when I wrote it, and that thing is ending in a about a week...

I hate writing introductions... In my head, they always come out sounding like a bad personals ad or the worst job resume ever created...

You know, "Hi, I'm Misery, I love long walks on the beach in the moonlight, kittens, snuggling in front of a fire, painting nekkid ladies, and moshing like there's no tomorrow. So hire me."

See what I mean? Sad.

I'm not a famous MySpace celebrity, nor do I play one on Buzznet...

So, who am I: I'm a fine artist/illustrator who's worked mainly in the comic book and gaming industries since high school. Gradually, my photography became less reference shots for painting and illustration and more straight photography as art in itself.

I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area (EAST BAY!!!)... home of the best punk rock music in the world.

I live with many (MANY) cats taken in as feral or strays who showed up on my doorstep, plus two chickens (originally 6, and possibly part velociraptor) rescued from the general store at an egg farm who were going to be "thrown out".

I was originally trained as a concert guitarist... I wanted to grow up and be Brian May... or Charo. Brian's awesome but Charo has better legs.

I used to get beaten up for being a vegetarian when I was a kid. (I never really understood the rationale for that...)

I left home when I was 16. I never graduated high school (I was set up, I swear, and I'm not the one who tried to blow up the principal's office, that was after I left). I still attended 4 different colleges. I ended up in Las Vegas working as a radio DJ with my own show with a successful 14th month run before leaving it to come back to California.

I (stupidly) moved away from the Bay and am now trapped in the Southern California desert, dead set on moving  back to real civilization. I refuse to grow old and die in The Devil's Trailerpark. Every foray into the outside world fills a little more of this hole in my heart and leaves a little bit more of me out there... someday, all of me will be back home again.

I recently recovered from a long illness, am still recovering, really - and am hell bent on making up the lost years. You only get so many days in your lifetime to accomplish your dreams, and I have fallen behind...

I love taking photos and making videos... it doesn't matter if it's a pretty cloud or a band performing in concert. Even in the dark and terrible there can be beauty. Whether I'm in the middle of a mosh pit, or the street or kneeling in the dirt, or a moving car, everything and everywhere there's a stolen moment waiting to happen.

I am who I am. Nothing is going to change who I am, what I do, or how I do it on or off Buzznet if I win this (although, I really do want that phone :). I've done the fame thing in my last incarnation, and fame plus $1.35 will get me a cup of coffee at Jack In The Box.

Everything I've said about myself  here you can find throughout my photographs and journals on Buzznet. It's not just a list, it's almost an index. I don't know what Buzznet will end up valuing most from the entries they get... All I can promise them is that they'll get 100% of the me they can see through my posts and media.

If I don't win, I'll still be doing everything I already do here... post original photos and videos, write journals, start and join groups, make friends, support people who do awesome work with little or no recognition...  If I do win, I get a brand new tool and the ability to keep doing what I do here, but on a much larger scale (and to a larger audience) in ways I currently can't express myself in (streaming media to my site). I'm excited by all the possibilities this would open up creatively, both in being able work with a different type of media and in potentially reaching more people with it...

...and I really do want that phone.

A Rose For Anissa...

These are from a series of photos I did when I was shooting reference for a graphic novel/anthology that I ultimately ended up not being a part of (I don't know if it was ever published. I hope not... it was pretty bad). I've done several paintings based on them (one included t the bottom of the page). They're all on actual real printed on paper from a film negative prints, so I've only got these four scanned in so far...

"If you build it..."

I'm writing this because I think some people are a little confused about the images I publish from (or for) other photographers.

For one, I just love working with good photos. I enjoy editing them, I enjoy posting them for other people to enjoy, I enjoy helping their creators present their work to the world; and I really enjoy helping both they and the artists they photograph gain greater exposure.

I think the first thing I did on Buzznet (after the QOTD zombie topic, of course) was to move my collection of Operation Ivy and East Bay punk media over here. There seemed to be some interest in punk rock and psychobilly here...

...then watched while what was here was buried under an avalanche of pop-punk and alternative bands. (I love MCR, too, but after they opened for Green Day for one tour, I think some of their fans rationalized that all MCR media would be forever relevant in the Green Day community; and don't even think of trying to convince me that PaTD is punk rock)

Then came the wonderous "group" feature on Buzznet.

My video media that was no longer visible to anyone visiting my site played acceptibly inside the groups, and they have that nifty "collections" feature which means you can organize both your photos and videos by galleries. And while not as good as using the regular Buzznet communities, a group can concievably cover any subject with as wide or narrow a focus as it's administrators decide. And so, the hope was reborn...

I started looking for new media, original work that the author would either be willing to bring to Buzznet themself or allow me to publish it in their stead...stuff that would represent the styles of music I'd hoped would be represented here, stuff that would lay a foundtion to draw in more of the same.

To that end, I was able to get a number of photo sets, some videos, and started posting tour dates and links to interviews and artists... but the most exciting thing came of a message I'd sent complimenting Elizabeth Bouras (Sistinas), who'd posted some very nice AFI photos on a message board, and mentioned I was looking forward to photographing Tiger Army (which she would also be doing at that show). as I was trying to establish a stronger community here and get some of the bands over to Buzznet. She wrote back to me offering her VERY extensive collection of concert photographs to supplement my own and help accomplish this goal.

Wow.

(she also gave me crash space and a hot meal after Tiger Army, so I didn't have to spend 11 hours in the LA Greyhound station overnight staring at the snack machine)

I posted several of her photo sets on Buzznet and once I got a good idea of how I wanted to present things, I started creating interest groups... then I started planting our media content, links, journals in them, laying the aforementioned foundation.

I am really happy with the response so far.... like watching interest in Tiger Army get established here (with a huge push from their presence at Warped Tour and a great new album), so shall it take time for the others, but it seems to be starting well...

.cyberpunk

It's no secret that I'm an oldtime cyberpunk...

My first website went online on June 20, 1995 (although I couldn't actually SEE my website for quite sometime, as I only had a UNIX Shell account at netcom.com and an AOL account... and AOL did not give access to the WWW back then, and when they did, it was only for PCs)... just in time to turn my pages black on February 8, 1996t to protest the U.S. government's plan to regulate Internet content FOR US, so our impressionable youth wouldn't be eternally scarred by ending up on "Mistress Mandy's House of Pain" when his self-centered imbecilically oblivious parents gave him a computer and then didn't bother to monitor what he did on it (or install a nanny-chip, because that would require them to lift a finger to actually parent)

Join the Blue Ribbon Online Free Speech Campaign

My site ended up being mentioned in an article in Wired Magazine and I received a letter from The White House in response to an email I sent to President Bill Clinton. I told him, basically, that I was perfectly capable of regulating my children's Internet usage without any help from him, thanks. I got invited to a LOT of genre convention panels speaking about Internet censorship after that.

Earlier on, I'd been a member of the computer club at my high school and was taking computer programming at the local junior college, when Steve Woznik came to our high school to speak and donated, I think it was around 10, Apple computers to my school. I used them to play "Deathmaze" when no one was looking, and writing Zork-like text adventures when someone was. I got caught playing "Deathmaze" once but convinced the teacher/supervisor of the lab that I wrote it. (possibly interesting side note: the guy who gave me a copy of Deathmaze came home one day to find an FBI warning (for hacking) stapled to his front door)

I was one of the original Mac Addicts, and also frequent contributer to Yahoo (back when it was two guys in a trailer in Netsacpe's parking lot, and they'd email you back and thank you for adding links). I also somehow ended up a Netscape developer, but only to the extent that I crash-tested new features etc. trying to make it do things it probably wasn't designed to do.

When I left HS (read: was thrown out :) the first job offer I got was at Epyx (famous then for the original "Loderunner" computer game. Unfortuntely, the day after they hired me, Epyx dropped it's game division :-P

Even further before that, as I am now with my DSLR, I had  a couple of years where it seemed I was physically bonded to one of those old, full VHS tape, camcorders.

And I happily wrote and drew science fiction.

So it surprised me quite a bit to realize that I've gone so long without setting up a forum for it... something I've now rectified...

.cyberpunk
From the time author Bruce Bethke first coined the term "Cyberpunk" in 1982, what Time Magazine once described as "A new counterculture... surfing the dark edges of the computer age" has spread to describe a dystopian spectrum of music, literature, film, social & political theory, style and subculture from the science fiction of William Gibson to Max Headroom and The Matrix to electronica, industrial and EBM.

A small treat, since Buzznet didn't like the embedding code enough to allow me to add it in the video section...

No 24 Hour Party Zone for me...

I will totally be crying Saturday because it's the last scheduled Hunter Revenge show, and I managed to not get a photo pass in to ANY of his shows in California...  and of ALL the people I've wanted to photograph this year, and couldn't, this is even more disappointing than the mad dash to San Diego at the last minute to MISS shooting Viva Hate... AND more disappointing than losing the memory card with all my GOOD Tiger Army photos on it.

Yep.

No, I can't just buy a ticket and shoot with my cheap point-and-shoot.

1) Tix cost money. They shut my phone off again last week. I sort of wanted to get it turned back on for Xmas. Or at least buy enough catfood that the chaos-kittens don't et me while I'm asleep. I lredy gve up my drem of a ne keybord with "A" and "W" keys still ttched to it.*

2) It's House of Blues. HOUSE OF BLUES, muthafuqka. I had to sign away my 1st born male offspring to Disney to get my gear into HOB San Diego to shoot Sick Of It All.... they TACKLE, MANACLE and HOBBLE  unauthorized camera users there. Okay. Maybe not manacle and hobble, (maybe) but they do go after your ass if you pull out a camera out of your cleavage (Disney does not want their franchised establishment popping up in the backgrounds of your photos. Seriously, I had to Sign and Initial multiple sections and subsections of contract specifically about rights to get portions of the interior of their building behind The Artists.)

Besides... I want to shoot Hunter in all his glorious expressivness with my Good Camera. I NEED to shoot Hunter with my Good Camera. If you have SEEN Hunter, you KNOW why I must shoot Hunter with my good camera.

And I NEED to  show Hunter a copy of The Worlds Best Ever Hunter/AFI Photograph... that I cannot post on the Internet, save that it sear the retinas of all who gazed upon it, scramble all data that comes in contact with it's pixelated awesomeness, crashing network mainframes, re-routing the routers, breaking the backbones, and throwing worldwide information transfers into chaos... ultimately, Crashing The Entire World** leaving us us to founder in a second World Wide Dark Age.

Yeah, it's that good.

Yes. Seriously.

I SAID YES. It's like... Spiderman #3.*** That cool.

But Hunter Revenge photos could be ever so much cooler...

.
.
.

Damn.

*also saving up for a new VR lens, which I've decided is absolutely necessary if every band in the world does not stop using red stage lights when I'm trying to photograph them

**except possibly parts of China

***the Comic Book, not the movie. I actually haven't seen the movie...

Oof, they did it again... (view counts)

On 11/16 I lamented that I'd been waiting to watch my visits on posts reach 300,000 (because that was pretty cool), but Buzznet lagged behind updating the count for over a week until I was suddenly past it, so it was sort of anticlimactic...

Well, they did it to me again, as I was at 374,000 this morning when I went to sleep and when I came back I was suddenly at 472,947...

And only about 15 of those visits had comments left, so without going through every piece of media I have, I have no idea what these people were all looking at (I only posted 2-3 things this morning and definitely didn't get 98,000 views on them!!!)

And I have no idea how they're determining view counts afa popularity... I tried looking at that list to see if it would tell me how many of those views actually happened in the last week, and mine is listed as barely above 1000.

Very weird. It's not that I obsess on my views or anything, but it's nice to be able to know how many people are coming to my site, as long as this thing is in place that's supposedly tabulating it, and it's gotten really confusing.

I don't think they count individual video views anymore... maybe that's part of the difference? Or that's the part of the count that lags behind on "visits" and isn't counted in "views"?

Over my dead body...

If you've read my 8 random facts about Misery blog, you've heard how I react against inapproprite attempts to exert authority over me.... well, the same goes for guilt-trips and hard-sell tactics (In fact, it's sort of sealing your own DOOM! to try them on me unless you really want to ensure I'd go to my deathbed before giving you whatever it is you're trying to get from me.

So, last night I get a brief cryptic message via my daughter that her friend is picking up two of my "kittens" (we have a litter of 6 month old kittens, that we're trying to find homes for)  to show to someone this morning. Ooookay. Was there some reason she couldn't ask me about this herself? So about 6am this morning I ask what's going on... is someone "borrowing" the cats and bringing them back...when? Where's she taking them, etc.? And get a non-committal response. That doesn't reassure me. So I make sure I'm awake this morning (that is a feat in itself, since I usually go to bed at this hour).

Shalua's Kittens 07.01.2007 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Friend comes to pick up her sister (who was sleeping over) and everyone just sort of stands there not talking... I'm just waiting for someone to bother talking to me directly about what they want to do with MY cats. Friend starts getting impatient and grumbles that she has to get to work. I wait. More gumbling. Friend's sister's is visibly upset and keep saying "It was a misunderstanding" while I keep waiting for someone to actually address ME. Finally I have to point out that I have no idea what the misunderstanding is, because no one has ever bothered to tell me what they wanted to do.

Friend then explains that she intends to take my cats with her to work, and show them to some woman she knows (she started off claiming it was a friend but turned out to just be a customer at the place she works), and if she likes one, she'll bring the other back, and give this lady the cat.

Shalua's Kittens - Ichimaru 8.15.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Excuse me? I'm trying to find them homes, but I'm not going to let this girl go hand my cat to someone I don't know, with no notice/info/anything. I ask, well, first off if she takes them out of the house, they're going to freak, but if she does, why can't this lady meet the cats, then bring them back here, and she can think about whether she wants one (sidenote, I won't adopt out one kitten alone, especially one of the ones she thought she was taking... he's incredibly insecure and needs one of his brothers to hide behind)...

Well, the girl found this unacceptible, "She wants a cat today". I counter with, "If she can't wait a day to get a cat, she probably shouldn't get a cat" (and definitely not one of mine). She replies, "Well, if she doesn't get one today (dramatic pause) she'll go out and get a kitten!"

Ohmygod... did she just actually do that? Does this person not know me at all?

Shalua's Kittens - Sephiroth  8.28.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

"Then she can go out and get a kitten."

My daughter could restrain herself no further over the concept of someone who absolutly couldn't wait and had to have a cat TODAY, and offered, "She doesn't sound like someone who should be getting a cat".

Friend has temper tantrum, and is apparently one of those who snaps at people with nasty little passive aggressive jabs when she doesn't get her way... but that, also,  seriously does NOT work on me. She hisses something about, I do want to give them away, don't I? and something about, I wasn't ready to give them up 6 months ago, either...

Shalua & Her Kittens - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Well, duh, This is the girl who had the brainstorm that she'd take my newborn (3 weeks?) kittens, stick them in a box, and take them to a club event she was going to, and give them away... and didn't know why I found this unacceptible, either.

Sorry, child, but I delivered them and had to tie their umbilical cords off (dental floss really does work) spend hundreds of dollars on food, cat litter etc and take care of them and love them and they're family... you don't stick family in a box and hand them out to strangers in a park...

Shalua's Kittens - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

She leaves. She leaves WITHOUT HER SISTER... who then bursts into tears. She feels this is all her fault, she was just trying to help. never does anything right... I leave her alone and go into my kid's room (where the kittens are). My daughter's afraid I'm mad at her...no, we're actually on the same page about things, and think people are dramatically over reacting (and that someone should have spoken to me directly before telling people she was giving them a cat)

We all go back into the living room and the sister's phone rings. Friend is mad and complaining about spending $10 on gas driving out here. Then we don't know what else was said but she relayed that this woman's two kids are now crying in the background because I wouldn't let this girl take the cats. At first we thought she said the lady was crying (and my daughter reiterated that this person should not be getting a cat) but it turned out their kids were. We're like, what did she tell them about this that made them cry? Daughter again states, if they're reacting like this, they shouldn't be getting a cat. Sister says, "They're only two".

Now I'm pissed off, two year olds don't cry over something like this unless someone MAKES them cry over it.... I'm betting on Ms Passive-Aggressive saying something to set them off, although sister says not. I tell her none of this is her fault but she says her sister will keep attacking her over it anyway. (they work at the same place)

Shalua's Kittens - Alan & Ichimaru  8.28.07 - Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Okay, another side issue here... the girl staying at our place was supposed to be here over Monday night only, but no one in her family could be bothered to take her home Tuesday morning, even though her sister now lives about 10 minutes from here and she was supposed to be going back over there Tuesday. Last week was her birthday. They made her go into work and sit all evening even though they had no customers scheduled, then didn't get her a cake or presents or  party because her birthday is in the same month as Xmas. Just unreal.

Talking to my daughter after all this was over...she asked me if everyone (other than us) is like this, is this how they all act and treat each other when they don't get their way? Is this how they treat other people? I try to assure her, no, there are a lot of good people, and they'd be appalled at how this group of friends/their family treats each other.

I point out what a good person our landlady is... considering we owe her two months rent that she needs to pay off her mortgage, and that she drove me 100 miles to a hospital (twice) for my port surgery, then went through her groceries and was trying to give us her food when she found out how broke we were (long story, and involves a deadbeat dad and someone who emptied my bank account).

She agrees. She also agrees that we really need to find new friends.

Viva Hate
Psychobilly? Hard Rock? Punk? The sound of Viva Hate could be described as all (or none) of the above. Drawing on influences such as American country music, 70s arena rock, early-80s skate punk and death rock, modern psychobilly, and more, Viva Hate has come to rise above the trends of cookie-cutter pop and retro rehash. By distilling the ingredients of their influences, rather than watering them down, Viva Hate are prepared to carve out their own niche in the ever-growing musical underground.

Here is a slightly random assortment of cover songs I've enjoyed hearing in the past couple of years (this is nowhere a definitive list, just songs/videos I liked, and there were a bunch more but I couldn't find videos for them)

Stop the FCC's Holiday Giveaway to Big Media

Stop the FCC's Holiday Giveaway to Big Media

Free Press Action Alert

Dear Media Reformer,

Ask Your Senators to Stop BigMedia

Take Action Now

People across the country are building a wall to stop the FCC's plan to let Big Media swallow up more local stations.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin refuses to listen to the public, but Congress is starting to pay attention. This week, the House announced a formal investigation into the way the FCC conducts business. And yesterday, during a House oversight hearing, Congress scolded the FCC for a"short-circuited decision-making process" and "abuse of power."

Our campaign is gaining momentum, but we need you to join us in our stand against Big Media.

Tell Congress: Stop FCC Chairman Martin & Big Media

In response to a growing public outcry, the Senate Commerce Committee this week passed the Media Ownership Act of 2007 (S. 2332). This crucial legislation would force Martin to slow down, give the public more time to comment, and address the negative impact of media consolidation on minority and female ownership.

Help us get 10 more co-sponsors by Friday.

Ask Your Senators to Co-Sponsor the Media Ownership Act

Chairman Martin hopes you aren't paying attention. He wants to vote on his proposal to let Big Media get even bigger on Dec. 18. If you think we need more local, diverse, and democratic media, now is the time to act.

Congress is taking action, but we need to show that this isn't just another inside-the-Beltway issue. Too much is at stake, and they need to see the faces of the millions of Americans who are fed up with another massive giveaway to Big Media.

Build the Wall: AskYour Senators to Co-sponsor the Media Ownership Act

In 2003, nearly 3 million citizens like you stood up to the FCC and put a stop to media consolidation. We can do it again. But we need to put a public face on the resistance to media consolidation.

Write Your Senators. Add Your Picture to the Wall. Stop Big Media.

Onward,

Alexandra Russell
