Who are you calling a c**t?!?

...AKA, considering the disturbing trends I've been seeing in casual language on Buzznet, MySpace, other sites, and the real world, it's time for a new installment of "Experiments in Social Theory!"

So, yeah, my college science credits were in Nutrition, and Human Sexuality (how cliche is it to take the college sex-ed course to fulfill a transfer credit?) and one of my projects involved listing EVERY gender-based derogatory epithet I could think of (the main conclusion was that I probably know way too many derogatory epithets)

It seems like the level of casual profanity and personal attacks has been rising (I have to constantly monitor and delete comments on my YouTube videos because of people who drop in only to say how much they hate the band and/or that anyone leaving a positive comment is a "fag", "bitch", shithead", "dumbass", "whore", "should fucking die", etc.

When did it become acceptible to scream profanity at complete strangers in public? Is it just easier to get away with rude behavior when someone is hiding behind a computer screen? Or is the Internet is just a window into how they act in "the real world" now?

More disturbing is that most of the profanity is based on comparing the target to something weak, stupid, inept... by comparing them to a woman or homosexual. (not that that hasn't been the state of things for a very long time, but certain words seem to be making a comeback)

Even more disturbing, much of it, and the most vitriolic of it, is coming from young people and teens.

What I hope is that you'll want to contribute to this project by sharing your own lists/suggestions/views by posting it in this journal's comment section...

(if anything pops up that is abusive to anyone posting here, consider your post deleted and yourself blocked)

blechhh...

My post Tiger Army sniffles have morphed over the past few hours into an excrutiatingly raspy sore throat, so all my projects other than maybe some random photo editing are on hold for the weekend.... I cannot afford to get -really-sick and end up with pneumonia again (December 06 sucked).

Thank you for the profanity, hold that thought and we'll pick up again next week ;P

Please go check out my concert photos on the other profile if you have the time. Except for forgetting the crappypointandshoot was set at way too high an ISO I'm really happy with how the ones I took @ Viva Hate with the camera practically in Matt's face (2-3 feet, tops) turned out. They were playing on one of those 3+' tall riser-stage-deals set up in an industrial-type space and if I wanted shots from the front I had to sit on the edge of the stage and shoot at point blank because I couldn't see over anyone's heads. I'm really happy with how the new VR 55-200mm DX lens performed for Tiger Army and D&D (couldn't use it @ Hate because I have to be at least 5 feet from the subject). I was sure all the shots were screwed up but it turns out it was double vision + a not too great viewscreen on my camera once I downloaded them and could see them enlarged...

My chest hurts, so I'm going to go off and be miserable offline now.

~Misery

Ghost Tigers & Viva La Hate

-In not too many hours I'm leaving for a new concert trip (Mayhem commences NOW!) ... I'm heading down to San Diego to photograph Tiger Army (along with fellow Kamikaze photographer Liz Bouras/Sistinas who is again giving me crash space tonight...)

...which is extremely important as the next morning I'm back on the bus and on my way to Las Vegas to photo (and just enjoy! :) a performance by Viva Hate playing during the 10th Annual Punk Rock Bowling weekend (wishing luck to Greg Utter's team!). If I'm really lucky I might be able to take the shuttle out to Sam's Town and get some shots of the tournament, too...

So now I need to stop procrastinating and start packing. My new VR lens arrived and should be a lot of help shooting under the weird lighting conditions at shows... with my karma I'll go to use it and find out I got (another) defective lens. I'm still hopeful. (and speaking of hope, hopefully before the next concert trip I'll have my Buzznet phone and be able to send in videos/photos from the road :-D )

If you get out to either of the shows, please come up and introduce yourself!

It's the notes section!

01.18.2008  6:59AM: I am smitten with my new VR lens. Oh golly, it's awesome... for those who want the details of the love affair, I've been shooting with (primary camera) a Nikon D50, mainly using the 55-200 DX Nikkor lens I got with it, and VR lenses weren't available at that time.

It's a decent lens, except in the dark with red stage lights and fog machines (plus it never worked right after my stalker kicked the shit out of my camera bag, ruining the autofocus on my other lens completely). Consequently, it couldn't shoot fast enough to prevent blurring and motion in low light levels.

With Nikon's new AF-5 DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G H-ED (basically a better version of what I was using), it compensates and you can supposedly shoot up to 4 shutter speeds lower than the regular lens in lower light levels. I guess I'll be finding that out tonight (I don't recommend testing new camera equipment AT a concert/event you're shooting, although it seems like I always am, but the new lens just arrived in the mail and this is the first time I can try it under concert conditions.)

Wow, my camera bag is getting heavy. I need to remember to stop and buy a ton of batteries for my backup camera, too. I need a new backpack :P

01.18.2008  7:12AM:  I'm not supposed to be on Buzznet but I'm clearing space on my harddrive and burning cds because I still need to empty a couple of memory cards so I can reuse them... I can't believe they used to put 30GB hard drives in Emacs and it was a big deal...

01.18.2008  11:56AM: As soon as my hair dries, I'm out the door... photos and travel stories should start showing up Sunday night on Misery's Wonderful life of DOOM... unless I meet the punk of my dreams and elope to points unknown...

Yeah, THAT'S so gonna happen :-P

If it does, I'll take lots of photos :-)

in response...

...to a Myspace Scene wannabe trying to hijack MY PARADE (LINK) on the Be Big on Buzznet forum...

Y'know, if he'd ever bothered to READ WHAT MARK WROTE up there where he explains why I was "the chosen one", or read the topic I submitted for my entry,  INSTEAD OF USING MY CONGRADULATORY TOPIC AS A PERSONAL ADVERTISMENT SPACE, he'd know I wasn't picked because of how many photos I took of myself, how many pseudo-celebrities I know on Myspace, how many people suck up to me (but I don't use the F-word/fan!), how many h8rz I've pissed off and blown off

(I'm more famous than Jeffree Star in the REAL WORLD and I've never got hate mail... (am I doing something wrong??)... I didn't name drop scene people and photographers who take their photos, and above all I DIDN"T MAKE ENDLESS POSTS ABOUT HOW I WAS GOING TO BE SOMETHING SOMEDAY, just all of you WAIT AND SEE, you'll all BE SORRY when I'm famous and you want to adore me and think of how badly you treated me when I was nothing!!!!

I already AM something. And I LIKE who I am. My life is FAR from perfect and is downright miserable sometimes, but I HAVE a life. I don't have to hire photographers to make me look like I have a life. I don't have to name drop "celebrities" and post pathetic image captures of them replying to my Internet comments and act like it makes them my most bestest friend, compatriot and admirer. I don't latch onto people like a leech and use their notability to promote myself. I know REAL celebrities, and they don't need to whore themselves out on Myspace and Stickam to be well known and respected. They got that from DOING SOMETHING and earning people's respect and admiration, not by posting badly composed photos of themselves with plastic toys and cupcakes.

I don't have to try to impress people by talking about what I'm GOING to do, I just do it and then share it with my friends and anyone who's interested in looking... I don't TELL THEM how much they're supposed to love it and bask in my wonderfulness (okay, maybe just not that much ;-P)

I thoroughly expect you to NOT GET IT and to continue to NOT GET IT, but have the decency to go NOT GET IT somewhere the hell else.

Shotguns and Machetes!

The Return of Geoff Kresge!

Announcement from Tiger Army -

"Geoff Kresge has returned as the stand-up bassist for Tiger Army -- this is a name that will no doubt be familiar to Tiger Army fans, Kresge performed all live shows with the band from 1999 to mid-2004, as well as performing on the band's second and third albums.  Jeff Roffredo has left the band as a friend, to pursue other interests.

Kresge says, "I don't think people understand what a difficult decision it was for me to make when I left the band in late 2004, or that it may or may not have been for the reasons that the fans have heard or read about.  Being given the opportunity to rejoin the band is an exciting prospect!"  Nick 13, Geoff Kresge and James Meza hit the road in the U.S. this week, check out Tourdates for ticket links and all other info..."

From the time author Bruce Bethke first coined the term "Cyberpunk" in 1982, what Time Magazine once described as "A new counterculture... surfing the dark edges of the computer age" has spread to describe a dystopian spectrum of music, literature, film, social & political theory, style and subculture from the science fiction of William Gibson to Max Headroom and The Matrix to electronica, industrial and EBM.

R.I.P. George MacDonald Fraser

I found out about this via Neil Gaiman's blog...

Obituary @ The Telegraph.co.uk...
1:48pm GMT 03/01/2008

"George MacDonald Fraser, who died on Wednesday aged 82, revived in a long-running series of novels the career of one of fiction’s most infamous characters, Flashman.

The fag-roasting bully of Tom Brown’s Schooldays, Thomas Hughes’s 1857 tribute to Dr Arnold’s Rugby, was last seen being expelled for drunkenness. Age had not improved him. Fraser’s appropriation in 1969, Flashman, joyously confirmed him as a thoroughgoing rotter and cad of the first water.

The book and its 11 sequels purported to be the memoirs of General Sir Harry Flashman, VC, discovered in a saleroom at Ashby-de-la-Zouch and entrusted to Fraser for editing. This device allowed Fraser to pilot Flashman through a picaresque series of encounters with some of the choicest episodes of Victorian history..."
