"Personal Jesus" is Depeche Mode's twenty-third UK single, released on August 29, 1989, and the first single from the then upcoming album Violator. Since then, the title song has been covered by numerous artists. It was the first hit from the album, reaching #13 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. According to songwriter Martin Gore:

"It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"

In 2004, "Personal Jesus" was ranked #368 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time [2], and in September 2006 it was voted as one of the "100 Greatest Songs Ever" in Q magazine. ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I love Johnny Cash, and MM's was okay but not very inspired (needed John 5 here). Lollipop Lust Kill's version is hard and full of angst, and re: their video, who hasn't thought about going after their cheating ex with a paintball rifle?

i could swear Nick Cave did Personal Jesus too but maybe i was thinking of Tom Waits Chocolate Jesus

He might have covered it but there's no video available? (I know Tori Amos did one on a live album but couldn't find a recording anywhere, either)
There's a list of other known covers on the Wikipedia link...

WOW! I voted Lollipop Lust Kill, I just dig how they did it! I had NNNNOOOO idea Johnny Cash covered this, I hadn't heard it before (weird how they set the song against the "Hurt" video LOL!!!) If I coulda voted twice I would've vote for Cash too!!! (I've had a thing for that man for years and years :D)

In the end though I DEF prefer the original! :)

i really am a fan of cash's whole album which Personal Jesus is on. He had just FOUND god when he recorded this (if memory serves) and its a sort of interesting commentary...

Here you go, Misery! http://www.yessaid.com/sonicshapes/2005-04-17_ personal_jesus.mp3
well, I gotta go with the original, but BIG honorable mentions to Cash and Lollipop Lust Kill (although I think the name of the band is silly and they should change it in order to reach their fullest potential); Marilyn Manson's version doesn't build enough on the original - it's just a copy of DM's style and so is the video :(
also, what is that wiggly dance Dave Gahan is doing in his solo act???? there's something a little odd about that.

If there weren't the original, I would vote Lollipop Lust Kill. I had to vote the original because I've been adoring Martin Gore...

For this song, I'm a metal head but I have to go with the original version of this song. It's just something grew up to, and i know that is showing my age just a bit.
